Providing school-readiness through behavioral and emotional development.

The pre-kindergarten program at Bright Starts Daycare & Learning Center is focused on providing pre-K children with school readiness skills that help bridge the gap between pre-school and kindergarten. The children will engage in school readiness activities that involve deeper learning and structured skill-building. Our teachers design lesson plans based on the students’ interests. They weave in group-time instruction and playful activities each day. Pre-K children will continue to master traditional fact-based learning skills such as:

  • The Alphabet
  • Numbers
  • Recognizing, spelling, and writing their name
  • Shapes
  • Colors
  • Seasons
  • Days of the Week
  • Months
  • Kinds of Weather
  • And more

At Bright Starts, our pre-kindergarten program puts a strong emphasis on developing a child’s abstract critical thinking skills. Children at this age are at the beginning stages of abstract thinking, and each activity they perform will be of richer and deeper quality. Learning to think critically is more important than ever for children in today’s rapidly changing world, which forms the foundation for all future learning. Children must be able to make sense of information, analyze a variety of situations, reason through problems, and develop solutions.

At Bright Starts Daycare & Learning Center, children will have ample opportunities to develop critical thinking skills. Teachers provide children with space and time to develop solutions on their own. For example, a child will build a block tower and may end up with teetering pieces at the top. Instead of intervening and providing an immediate solution, a child is allowed to work through various options to correct his or her actions. In other situations, teachers will ask open-ended questions, which allow a child to explain their logic. Encouraging a child to think in new and different ways helps them expand their critical thinking skills.

In addition, Bright Starts focuses on behavioral and emotional development in the pre-kindergarten program. Behavioral skills include interacting with teachers and friends in positive ways (e.g. taking turns), retraining negative impulses (e.g. hitting, pushing, yelling) and positively navigating conflict resolution with friends. Emotional development skills include identifying emotions in themselves and others (i.e. emotional self-awareness leads to self-control), managing strong emotions (i.e. Excitement anger frustration and distress), and empathy and understanding of others’ viewpoints (i.e. caring about others embracing diversity).
